Before You Continue
Please review the following information carefully.
Design Foundations Is the First Year of the Design Curriculum
All Ohio State Design students begin with Design Foundations, a shared first-year experience that develops creative, technical, and collaborative skills while introducing students to the four undergraduate design majors:
- Experiential Media Design
- Industrial Design
- Interior Design
- Visual Communication Design
At the conclusion of Design Foundations, students apply for admission to continue into their intended major.
Completing Design Foundations Does Not Guarantee Admission to a Major
Students in Design Foundations apply to continue into their intended major during the spring semester through a process that includes portfolio review and, in some cases, an interview with faculty.
Admission to Design Foundations does not guarantee admission to a specific design major.
Design Foundations Begins in Autumn Semester
Design Foundations studio courses are currently offered only on the Columbus and Newark campuses and follow a required sequence beginning each autumn semester.
Students who submit this form may be admitted to the next available Design Foundations cohort or, when appropriate, placed into the DSGN-PRE plan while awaiting entry into the curriculum.
Time to Degree
Prospective students should understand that all undergraduate Design majors follow a highly structured four-year sequence of studio coursework.
Students entering Design Foundations through this process should expect to complete four additional years of coursework after beginning the Design Foundations sequence, regardless of the number of college credits previously earned.
While prior coursework may satisfy General Education, elective, or other degree requirements, it typically does not shorten the time required to complete the Design curriculum.
